Boot Chapter 19

As soon as Tina and Adam had started to move Dan away, Blair moved forward. He could tell that Mark and Martin wondered what he was going to do. He was going to secure the building and then he could sit down and wait for his sentinel to come and get him. Simple. When they got to the bottom of the stairs, Blair turned to Mark and gestured for the gun. As the gun was passed, Blair linked in to Meggie and asked, "Where is he? What is he doing?"

"He's in the kitchen, he's trying to..." Meggie gulped and continued, "Pete was his brother. He's angry. Please don’t go near him."

Blair viewed the information with satisfaction. Emotions clouded people's judgements, reactions made them vulnerable, easier to kill. Ignoring the last part of Meggie's speech, Blair checked that the gun was ready to fire. Whispering to Mark and Martin, Blair ordered, "Get behind us. We're going upstairs."

Martin opened his mouth to say something but Blair glared at him. Martin swallowed and lowered his gaze.

Blair made sure his hold on the sentinel was firm, and trying to be as quiet as he could, mounted the first step. He found that he had to divide his attention between checking his footing, keeping Meggie under control, and checking the way ahead. The group had gotten halfway up the stairs when a voice came from above them, "Ah, the mice are trying to run." There was a soft click. "And you've got little Meg with you too." The voice changed, became hard. "Come up here, Girl."

Blair looked up and he could see Frank standing at the top of the stairs. He started to bring the gun up, trying to control the shaking finger that curled around the trigger. Then he was hit by a blast of emotional energy that coursed down the link. The blast was so unexpected that he was forced to his knees under the shock. He tried to banish the images and emotions so that he could focus on his task. Blair heard someone laugh nearby. With an almighty effort he forced the link shut and forced himself to focus on Frank.

The gangster laughed. "Weak. The boss never let her get in the way when there was business to take care of." Blair shook his head to clear it of the aftershocks of the blast and then yelled as he saw Frank lift his gun. He dived to the side, losing hold of the gun. He turned to watch it clatter down the steps and then clasped his hands over his ears as he heard the reverberation of the bullet as it was fired. He saw Martin wrestle Meggie away and the pair roll down the concrete steps. Out of the corner of his eye he saw Mark jump over the open side of the steps. Then he realised - open stair, no gun. He turned and gazed at the gangster.

Frank moved down the steps. "The boss underestimated you. We all did." He smiled, but it was cold, as cold as death. "That's why you’re going to be the first."

Blair thought about trying to run, but he couldn’t get any of his limbs to move. He was frozen as he watched the gangster take aim. He finally couldn’t watch any more and closed his eyes. 'Sorry Jim; I failed.' He heard the bang and waited for the pain. When he didn't feel the impact, he opened his eyes. Frank was still standing above him and then the gangster crumpled. Blair backed away, almost falling down the stairs in his haste to get away from the falling body. He was almost at the bottom of the stairs when he stopped and looked upwards. There was another man standing there. Blair closed his eyes for a second and then looked up again. "Jim."

The Dark Sentinel quickly made his way down the stairs and ghosted a hand over Blair.

Blair grabbed the hand and said, "I'm okay."

The Dark Sentinel growled a little under his breath when all he could do was open the link to his guide and nothing more. Jim lifted his hand from Blair, and stepping over where the body sprawled on the stairs, made his way down the final few steps.

Blair followed him. "Dan needs medical attention."

Jim was already standing over Slater. He then moved over to Tina, sniffing over her and growling.

Tina stood still and let the Prime reassure himself that it wasn't her blood that he could smell. She held onto Adam as Jim proceeded to scan the younger guide.

Blair watched Jim for a moment and then turned away. He caught sight of Mark on the ground and moved over to him. Blair held out a hand to him and said, "You okay?"

Mark looked at Blair for a moment and then found an interesting spot on the ground to look at instead. "Just winded." The guide pushed himself off the ground and stood up. Mark dusted himself off and said, "Did anyone get hit?"

The Dark Guide smiled a little as he watched the guide's fearful reactions. The GDP guide had obviously never seen or thought that a guide could… Blair paused in his thoughts as the import of the Mark's words hit him. There had been a shot; it had gone right by him. Blair turned and looked back to where his sentinel was checking Tina over. Tina, Adam, Mark, Slater- there were two missing. Blair looked up and down the corridor wishing he had sentinel hearing and eyesight. Suddenly, Jim was at his side.

"What is it, Chief?"

"Two missing. The sentinel and the other guide," answered Blair, even as he tried to lower his barriers to allow him to trace the others. "He … she can't be allowed to take him away. He knows-"

Jim placed a hand on Blair's lips and then paused for a moment. "Beyond the stairs. He's in pain." Jim's lips tightened and then he moved off at a run, skirting the body that had slid to the bottom of the stairs.

Blair followed closely behind. Beyond the stairs it was all shadow and he tripped over two bodies grappling on the floor. Blair rolled over onto his back and began to pick himself up.

"Help the guide, Sandburg. I'm going to have a chat with our friend here."

Blair fumbled his way to Martin's side. "Can you walk?" he asked tersely.

Martine breathed out a pain filled reply, "Yeah. It’s only a graze. She was trying to help me."

Blair didn’t reply as he helped the older guide to his feet and supported him back out past the stairs and then helped Martin down to the floor beside Slater. Blair grimaced as he looked at the long track of the bullet wound down the side of Martin's body. As a shadow fell over him, Blair turned and saw that Mark had come up to help him. He ordered, "I need something to stop the bleeding." Mark nodded and turned away.

Blair bent down to examine the wound further, only dimly registering the sound of tearing cloth behind him. After a few moments a wad of material was wordlessly pushed into Blair's hands from behind, and he wadded it up into a pad and pressed it onto the wound. Martin flinched and grimaced and cursed under his breath and moved slightly away from Blair. Blair grasped Martin's shoulder and hissed, "Do you want to bleed to death?" The older guide shook his head. Blair returned to his task only to be distracted by the sound of Jim's angry voice. He turned in its direction and saw Jim had pinned Meggie up against the opposite wall. Blair crossed quickly to the side of his sentinel; a smile flickered across his mouth as he saw her flinch from him.

"Where are the explosives?"

"I don’t know…please, I don’t know."

Jim pressed harder on Meggie, pushing her so that she was right up against the wall. "Come on. We both can smell them. Where did they lay them and when were they going to blow them?"

Meggie opened her mouth as if to speak and then glanced to the body that lay at the bottom of the stairs. Her head dropped and although Blair could hear her mumbling, he couldn’t hear the actual words. He glanced at Jim who nodded as the woman spoke and then moved off and knelt next to Frank’s body. Blair watched in fascination as Jim searched the dead man. After a few short moments, Jim was examining a small black box and speaking into his throat microphone. After a short conversation, Jim moved back towards Blair.

"Chief, keep everyone here until I say we move. Thanks to her we know where they've placed the explosives, but there may be a few booby traps placed that she doesn’t know about. As soon as Taggart gives the stairway and here the all clear, then we'll get the paramedics and the rest down."

Blair nodded as he asked, "Where will you be?"

Jim checked the magazine on his pistol. "The body count upstairs is two short. I'm just checking." Blair opened his mouth. Jim shook his head. "You need to stay. Our Clan, our responsibility."

Blair nodded. Once Jim had left his side, he turned his attention back to his immediate responsibilities. He saw Dan was sitting up and looking awake, supported by Adam; Tina was on Dan's other side. Mark was checking Martin's wound. Blair finally looked down at Meggie who had been left to slide down the wall; now she was curled on her side. Blair knelt down and checked the wrist restraints that Jim had put on. He saw that they'd been put on tightly and were quite secure. At his touch, Meggie started and began to try and roll away. Blair pulled on the restraints and pulled her back towards him. "Don’t think you can get away, Sentinel."

"Please let me go to him,” Meggie whispered. “He's calling for me. Please, he's hurt. They don't know he's a guide, his barriers. Please, he's hurting, his voice, it’s weaker."

Blair shook his head. He declared, "No."

Meggie whimpered a little but seemed to accept what he'd said. She then said, "There are others here aren’t there? Like him …and me…I can feel them."

Blair glanced at the stairwell. Jim had mentioned the Clan, Edwards and Niven would be there and Hunter; once he knew, the Shield would have been on the first plane back to Cascade. Blair looked down at Meggie already beaten. She wouldn’t put up any opposition, but she'd be an irritant to the other Clan sentinels. Blair looked at the woman before him, and saw her eyeing the pathway to the stairs. He just knew that she would do anything to reach her guide, just like Jim would do and had done for him. If she tried when the others came, then she would be dead within an instant of her moving. Making his decision, Blair closed his eyes, and aided by the physical connection he had with her, he opened up the weak link he had with her. Again she tried to prevent him entering her mind and he could hear her saying no over and over again, but her barriers were flimsy and soon he was through into her mind. Suddenly it was over. Blair opened his eyes and saw that her breathing was shallow and her body limp. Her eyes had rolled back in their sockets so he closed the lids. She'd probably be zoned for an hour or so.

After he'd assured himself that her airway was protected, Blair turned around to look at the others. He wasn't prepared for the horrified faces that greeted him. Blair stood up and dusted his hands off. He glanced down at Meggie again. "Any time now this corridor is going to be full of Clan sentinels in full BP mode. Do you think that they wouldn’t regard her as a threat if she was still conscious?"

One by one they dropped their gazes.

"They're not down here, Chief." Blair turned and looked at Jim who was back talking into his throat microphone. After a brief pause, Jim looked at Blair and smiled. "House is clear. They're sending the medics and Niven and Walton down now."

The pair moved to the bottom of the stairs just in time to see two SWAT officers flank the door at the top of the stairs. The SWAT officers nodded to someone behind them and then Niven appeared, followed closely by Walton. The dark pair stood away from the bottom of the stairs and watched the reunions closely.

Niven came to a full stop opposite Tina. He was repulsed by the strong smell of blood that emanated from her clothes, only relaxing when he realised that it wasn't from her. Needing to connect with her, he reached out and pulled her close. "Oh God, Tina. I thought…."

Tina leaned into Niven, reassured at last by his familiar touch, she felt herself letting go. "I…my baby, is she all right? Tony? I missed you all so much."

Niven gently rubbed her back. "Everyone's fine, just been so worried over you. You okay, I mean no one hurt you?"

Tina shook her head, "No, I'm okay…I'm okay." She paused and said, "I.. they injected us with something, I can't, not yet…"

Niven kept a tight hold of her. "I know, I know. We'll get you checked out at the hospital. Tony and the baby will be waiting for you there."

Tina swallowed. "These clothes. Can I get out of these clothes?"

Niven nodded. "When we get to the hospital."

Walton had stopped just short of his guide. He closed his eyes, took in a big breath. Then opened his eyes again. His guide was still there, looking tired and in need of a good shower but essentially unharmed. "Sparks… you okay?"

Mark grinned, "Yeah, you big lug, I'm okay." He joked, "Took you long enough to get here; got lost without your guide?"

Walton just shook his head, "You don’t know the half."

Mark glanced over to where Tina and Niven were reconnecting and whispered, "It's okay, I don’t think we'll be reported if we break the regulation about hugging."

Walton responded with a goofy smile and grabbed his guide and dragged him into a tight embrace.

Blair turned away from watching the reunions and saw that Jim had moved further up the corridor. He moved to the side of his sentinel and asked, "Naomi?"

Jim brought his guide close to his side and said, "Safe. As soon as we knew Courcy had disappeared, we brought her into the station. We know she's been a pawn."

Blair glanced back at the crowd around the stairs. Harvey had appeared and was kneeling next to Slater. A paramedic was attending to Martin. Harvey's guide was wrapping a survival blanket around Adam. He felt the strong hands of his sentinel on his shoulders, turning him round, pulling him into a tight embrace. Although he knew there were things to do, security to arrange, the Dark Guide needed this moment of partial connection to his sentinel, his soul mate.

Jim ghosted his hands over Blair and found the wound on the top of Blair's head. He growled and pulled the guide closer into him. "You didn’t say that you were hurt!" Over the top of his guide's head, Jim shouted, "Harvey!"

Blair was patient while the two sentinels fussed over him. Harvey peeled back the dressing that had been applied an hour or so earlier and taped it back down almost immediately, pronouncing there was nothing more she could do until she'd checked via x-ray about skull fractures. Harvey patted him on the shoulder and went back to check on Dan. He commented, "The Shield should be here." Jim didn’t answer. Blair looked at the sentinel and saw that Jim's face was expressionless and his chest barely moved up and down. The guide cursed himself for allowing Jim to fall into a zone and then a flicker of the sentinel's eyes made Blair realise that the sentinel was concentrating. He placed a hand on Jim's back and said, "Your guide is here, Sentinel."

Suddenly, Jim took a big, deep breath. He focused his eyes on Blair and said, "He's here."

Blair looked around, instantly understanding who Jim meant. He said, "She told me there was someone familiar. Where, in the house?"

Jim shook his head. "Out there. In the forest." He looked calculatingly at the Dark Guide. "He's old, he thinks he can escape."

Blair smiled grimly. "We are young. He won’t escape."

Jim turned around and shouted, "Edwards!"

Edwards appeared from the growing throng in the corridor and moved quickly up to the primes. "Prime?"

In a tone that brooked no argument, Jim said, "I'm leaving you in command. Simon should have arranged a place of safety for them all. No GDP. "

Edwards glanced back towards the crowd, "Even the others?"

"Especially the others." Blair confirmed.

Edwards looked uncertain for a moment and then nodded. He asked, "What about the sentinel? The GDP will want to claim her."

Jim looked towards Blair who glanced quickly across at Dan and then back at Jim. Jim licked his lips as he digested the significance of Blair's glance towards Slater.. "Transfer her to the PD. Keep her isolated, no GDP, no lawyers, no one. The Shield is returning. Make sure he understands that she is his responsibility. I am sure it is well within his capabilities."

Edwards smiled grimly at the sarcasm in the Senior Prime's voice. "I am sure it is. I will see that every thing is carried out." Edwards licked his lips and asked, "Where are you going?"

The primes looked at each other with a feral gleam in their eyes and then Jim said, "Hunting."

Edwards swallowed and then said, "Everything will be done as you ordered. David, come with me. We have work to do."

David didn’t follow immediately. The guide reached out to Blair. Blair stretched out his hand and the two guides clasped hands in greeting. David was about to say something when Edwards called on David from further down the corridor. David said to Blair, "See you later." The guide broke the contact and turned and walked quickly away to the side of his sentinel.

Jim said, "Let's go." Without waiting to see whether Blair followed, Jim turned and strode off towards the stairs.

Lisa heard the four man team approaching. She glanced at Karl who was lying in the gully she'd pushed him in after she'd applied a very temporary field dressing to his the wound on his arm. "Help's on the way." Once she'd seen her guide nod, she turned back to the job in hand. Checking that her weapon was loaded, she discharged it into the target area. The sniper was clever; he'd took the guide out of the equation with his first shot and then had been on the move between each of his shots. The helicopters flying low overhead had been the sweetest noise that Lisa had heard in a long while. She kept up her fire while her relief moved into the area around her observation post. A second weapon began discharging next to her. Lisa looked to her right and saw that it was McIntosh. She nodded at him, ducked down and flicked the safety on her weapon. She crawled quickly across the ground to where Turner was opening a pack next to Karl. Welch stood guard while Martinez moved up to assist McIntosh.

Lisa pushed past Turner and knelt down next to Karl. She ran a quick sensory sweep over him and was relieved to note that his breathing seemed to be clear, and his pulse wasn't too rapid.

Karl grabbed Lisa's hand and said, "It's just a graze. I'll be okay."

Lisa squeezed his hand and then laid it back down over his body. She took the temporary dressing off and saw that the bleeding had slowed down to a dribble. She asked for antiseptic and when the antiseptic spray had been handed to her, she covered the wound in a fine spray, ignoring the hissed complaints of her guide with difficulty. She took the padded dressing that Turner offered and pressed it down onto the wound. She taped the dressing in place. Then she took Karl into her arms and gave him a quick hug that he gladly returned. After a few moments, Lisa laid Karl back down on the ground. "Need something for the pain?” she asked, “might be a while before we can get you out of here."

Karl nodded. The hug had been nice, but now his arm was protesting the movement. "Something for the pain would be nice."

Lisa turned and dug around in the medical bag and quickly located what she wanted. She withdrew two syringe packs. "Going to give you a dampener as well; then you can get some rest without worrying about stuff."

Karl nodded. As Lisa prepared to give the injections, he remarked, "Does this mean I get out of the washing up for a while?"

Lisa rolled her eyes. She joked back, "And making the beds and all those jobs you hate doing!" She quickly gave the injections and got rid of the syringes. She looked at her guide, "They’ll make you sleepy. McIntosh and Welch will stay with you. "

Karl nodded. He could already feel the analgesia taking control of his system and his eyes were heavy. As Lisa moved to stand up, he reached out with an arm and held her back. "Be careful out there. His guide is dead. He doesn’t care who he takes with him."

Lisa looked at him seriously for a moment and then said, "I know."

Karl smiled briefly and simply stated, "Later." He laid his head down on the pack that Turner had slid into place and closed his eyes.

Lisa checked him over again, and satisfied her guide was in as good a condition as possible; she stood up and grabbed her weapon. "Turner, Martinez, you're with me. Welch get him evacuated as soon as you can."

Tina checked that her weapon was loaded and flicked the safety off. Pulling her group off to one side, she fished a narrow beam flashlight out of her equipment belt and switched it on. Holding it so that it cast a small pool of light, Lisa then proceeded to outline her plan using hand signals. After a short while the group moved out through the forest.

Courcy heard the wolf howl in the distance and stopped and looked down the path that he'd taken from the school. He'd heard the cry above the noise of the helicopters and the gunfire that sounded intermittently in the distance. After a few moments he laughed out loud. There were no wolves in the forest; he'd sat in on several meetings about projects to reintroduce wolves back to their former Cascade habitat. Courcy shifted the pack on his shoulders and turned back to go forward. He'd spent enough time grieving over the past. Using the flashlight he carried with him, Courcy located the appropriate path to take and walked steadily forwards over the ground that was still slick with mud and wet leaves.

Ten minutes later, Roger stopped again. He turned and shone his flashlight down the path. He could have sworn he'd heard something or someone moving towards him. A few small ground animals skittered across the path of his beam. Roger shook his head again and turned to move once more when he definitely heard the roar of something big and predatory. He flashed his light down the path again, and seeing nothing, he made the decision to move off. His speed was hindered by a combination of rising ground and the slickness of the surface underfoot. Every few minutes, Roger looked back to check behind him. The feeling of being pursued was growing stronger every minute. He could hear the sounds of the animals breathing as they moved towards him. Roger looked around to see if he could find some cover while the two animals passed by. As the beam of his flashlight swung around the clearing, he saw that he was too late. A jaguar stood on his path ahead and to his rear a wolf blocked his way.

Roger scrabbled for his weapon but stopped when Ellison stepped out beyond the jaguar. Courcy shook his head to clear it. He couldn't have seen what he had seen. He glanced behind him and saw Blair step into the path Taking a deep breath, Courcy said, "Blair! You're alright! I'm so relieved."

Blair's serious expression didn’t change and he didn’t reply to Roger's lies.

Courcy swallowed and edged away from the pair as they approached him. He gabbled, "I came to see if you were okay, if I could help with anything. Maybe persuade Meggie to let you and the others go."

"Why?"

Courcy swivelled in the direction of Ellison, his feet sliding a little under him. "Naomi's a friend of mine, a dear friend. When I found out Meggie was still alive, I thought she would listen to me, she would tell Mancini to let them go."

Ellison's face didn’t change. He insisted, "Why?"

Blair joined in. "Yes, why Roger? Why all this?"

Courcy tried to dodge past Ellison, but the jaguar growled and he backed away from both man and animal. Courcy turned to face Blair, "Because I hate you. I hate sentinels and guides. You have no place in the modern world. You’re all throwbacks and primitives. Look at you now; you think you can scare me with these tricks?"

Ellison curled up a lip and took a sniff. "The fear is pouring off you in waves, Courcy."

Courcy took a step back and looked at the dark pair. He sneered, "You want to know why I hate you so much?" The dark pair didn’t deign to reply. "We had everything, everything. My business was taking off and we were making plans for the rest of our lives, and then her damn senses kicked in and after that she was just…" Courcy balled his fists up. "I tried for years to get her to come back and live with me. The environmental crap was for her. I even offered to take her kid in." Courcy paused and paced around the small space that the dark pair had allowed him. "Thank God she left me before she showed. That would have been embarrassing. Roger Courcy cuckolded by a guide." Roger turned to Jim and said, "At least you won’t have that problem."

The jaguar growled at him and took a step towards the older man. Roger took another step back. "Finally I found out what she was doing at that commune, worked out a deal for her. She'd avoid prison and come home with me, with a new guide. But …the stupid bitch…"

Blair asked quietly, "But Meggie, the kidnap-“

"Think I was going to pay three million for a kid that wasn't mine?” Roger interrupted. He twisted his mouth up and said quietly, “Most of the money was fake."

"But…" Blair started to ask and then shook his head angrily. Why was he debating with this man? The Dark Guide cried out for vengeance not explanation. He looked across at Jim and met his sentinel's eyes.

Jim shook his head ever so slightly and started to say, "You have the right to remain…"

Courcy held his hand up and took a step closer to Jim. "Before this becomes all official, can I ask you something?" Jim's eyes narrowed but he nodded. Courcy flashed a glance at Blair and then turned his attention back to Jim. "So can you still get it up with women?"

Jim blinked slowly. "What?"

"After being with your guide, the bond, do women still do it for you?"

Blair stepped forward. Keeping a tight control of his anger, he warned, "Courcy."

Apparently unaware of the danger he was in, Courcy continued, "It’s a pity you bonded with Blair. They say guides that leave the correctional center aren’t 'cherry' anymore. The GDP could have at least bonded you with a female guide."

Neither Jim nor Blair moved or blinked. They were as still as statues. Suddenly, the wolf and the jaguar leaped straight at Courcy who scrabbled to get away from the animals; no longer were they an illusion. The panicked man raced for the edge of the path and the dark forest that lay beyond it. The wolf stretched out its snout and snapped at the heel of the enemy. Its jaws closed on empty air, and with a howl, the wolf lunged again.

Courcy heard the clack as the wolf's jaws closed on empty air again. He couldn’t hear where the jaguar was. Grabbing the flashlight from his equipment belt as the continued running, he shone it into the inky blackness at the side of the path. The narrow beam showed the immediate area to be full of trees and branches. Courcy didn’t need to glance back to know where the wolf was; he could hear its breathing and heart beat. There was no time to lose. He dived into the area, just in time to avoid yet another lunge by the wolf. Courcy felt a moment of surprise. as instead of falling onto wet and muddy ground, he began falling though a succession of branches. He heard a loud crack of bone and then it all went black. Courcy never felt his gentle touchdown in a deep collection of newly fallen leaves.

Jim raced to the edge of the path and looked down. He could easily track the path of Courcy through the branches. He focused his hearing and eyesight to look at the bottom of the thirty-foot drop beneath him. He paused a second longer and then turned to Blair who had hung back from the edge of the path. Jim reported, "He's alive."

Blair joined Jim at the edge of the path and looked down into the inky blackness. "He'll get away with it. We need to.…"

Jim paused for a moment and played back the sounds of the fall. He smiled coldly, and said, "I don’t think so. Let him live. He's trapped now." Jim turned to face Blair and said, "I promise you he won't get away with it. I won’t rest until this man has faced justice for what he's done."

Blair exhaled loudly and rubbed a hand through his hair. He grimaced when he touched the dressing and remarked, "Oww."

Jim grabbed his guide and took him into the safety of the center of the path. "My guide." Even without a sensory scan, Jim could tell from the tiny tremors that were starting to course through Blair's body, that his guide's physical endurance had reached its limit. For the first time, he also realised that the guide was without a jacket. Jim's nose twitched as it registered a faint aroma of Blair's linkage scent. Jim pulled his shivering guide to him with one arm and with the other flicked on his radio transmitter. to request urgent medical assistance, all the time scanning the forest for a suitable spot for shelter.

Smith watched from his patch of shelter as the group that were hunting him approached his lair. He'd heard one of them find the rifle, empty and silent now, discarded when its job had been done. He even knew which of the feet was the sentinel. That was why he'd shot the guide first of all, to distract her, so that he could stay in the one position, but she'd been cool under pressure. Smith knew that she wouldn’t let him go now, not now that he'd spilled the blood of her guide, even though he'd aimed for the arm and not for the heart or head. He waited until the sentinel had started walking towards his hiding place. 'I'm coming, Jonas, I'm coming.' He looked down to check that his GDP issued revolver was in his hands and that the safety was off. Once he was sure of that, he stood up and aimed his weapon.

"CASCADE PD, DROP YOUR WEAPON!”

Even with sentinel hearing, Smith never heard the shot that killed him.
